Force Restart a Synology NAS

There are a number of reasons a Synology NAS may need to be shut down or restarted. If a system becomes unresponsive, the following steps may be necessary to restore functionality.

This action should not be completed unless required as a forced shutdown may interrupt other important system functions.

To complete a restart, follow the steps to Shut Down, then after the device is powered off, complete the steps to Power On.

Shut Down
  1. Locate the power button: Find the dedicated power button on the Synology device.
  2. Press and hold: Hold down the power button firmly for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  3. Shut down initiated: The power button will flash, indicating the device is shutting down.
  4. Wait, do not unplug: Shutdown timeframes may vary, but can take a few minutes.
Power On
  1. Verify status: When the device is powered down, all status lights will be off.
  2. Locate the power button: Find the dedicated power button on the Synology device.
  3. Press to start: Press the power button for 1 second to turn on the device.
  4. Start up initiated: When the device is starting up, the power button will flash.
